Nowadays we find more and more women are starting their own businesses. Women not only run these businesses successfully but also make them a success. The success ratio of women are more when compared with men that the governments of all nations have understood the potential of women and are ready to help them by providing grants for their business in order to motivate them. Some of the popular businesses started by women include craft business, brokerage, consulting, administration jobs and housekeeping jobs and so on.

Earlier women used to approach their relatives, friend s and local banks for commercial loans. But now they have understood and known that they are eligible for grants from government which need not be repaid and are utilizing them to the fullest extent. Apart from these normal grants there are also business grants for minority women of Asian, African American or Spanish American origin.

Actually free grants for minority women business are loans which are offered by granters to the receivers without expecting them to repay. This means, the receiver who have received a grant need not repay the granter at any point of time and can make use of the money for their business. Normally free grants for minority women businesses are offered by non profit organizations or institutions, government organizations and other businesses. Apart from this regional authorities and individual states too have their own set of free grants for minority women.

Loans and grants are not similar but are very different from each other. Loans attract interest from the receiver to the granter and the principal amount is required to be paid back after a stipulated time frame, but grants do not attract any interests and need not be repaid back. Since repayment is not involved, the credit score or history of the applicants is not checked for providing grants which might not be case with loans. Grants are not like loans that they are offered only in limited numbers.

Details of free grants for minority women for starting business can be got from non profit organizations, women organizations, from online websites, from friends, women activists of the locality or area and personal lawyers. There are also minority women grants especially meant for single mothers who can avail this for continuing their education or start their own business and so on. Single mothers can gain economic status and in the course of time their social status too with the help of these grants.

Statistically, women owned businesses are not as successful as male owned businesses. According to Census data cited in Jim Hopkins’ 2003 USA Today Article “Mars vs. Venus extends to entrepreneurs, too”, companies owned by women average $151,129 in annual revenue vs. $582,450 for those owned by men. According to the 2011 Census Statistical Abstract based on 2002 Census data, sales and receipts for female owned businesses are 940 Billion, and sales and receipts for male owned businesses are 7,061 Billion.

I have been giving a lot of thought to why there still is such a disparity. Although I am not a psychiatrist, I think codependency may have something to do with it.

I have been watching the reality TV show Ruby on The Style Channel and how Ruby is coping with her need to lose weight. On one episode Ruby asked herself and had a team of experts trying to determine what is holding her back from losing weight. She lost quite a bit but gained 30 pounds back. There were consistency issues.

Well, one of the experts stated that Ruby needed to reflect on her codependency issues. According to Wikipedia, codependency is defined as:

Codependency is a tendency to behave in overly passive or excessively caretaking ways that negatively impact one’s relationships and quality of life. It also often involves putting one’s needs at a lower priority than others while being excessively preoccupied with the needs of others. Codependency can occur in any type of relationship, including in families, at work, in friendships, and also in romantic, peer or community relationships. Codependency may also be characterized by denial, low self-esteem, excessive compliance, and/or control patterns. As evidenced by Ruby’s behavior, codependents have the following traits:

* Not wanting to face hardship, pain, sadness, rejection
* Surrounding one’s self with people that take care of them
* Hard to trust people

I counsel small businesses and I have a small business that has seen its ups and downs. I have witnessed these same traits in some women business owners. It seems to be much harder to face fears; the hardship of building and operating a business; the need to be willing to do more and more; and the rejection by prospects. Rejection in the sales cycle breeds shame, fear, and secrets. Also, many women business owners still rely heavily on their spouses, mentors, coaches, colleagues, peers, and friends.

I cannot help but wonder if the fact that women were held in a dependent role to men for hundreds of years here in the United States makes us a bit codependent. I wonder to what extent societal norms make some women codependent on comforting things and if those comforting things cause symptoms that thwart our success. Think about the fact that the Women’s Liberation Movement and major publications such as “off our backs” was only 40 years ago.

In Ruby’s case, she is constantly being advised to confront what is holding her back and keeping her from losing weight. Ruby is constantly being advised to not be in denial about what she does to sabotage her success, and to not confront the core problems, and her codependency on food and people that take care of her.

When women business owners struggle, they too should confront what is holding them back from earning their goal revenues. Women business owners should be honest about any behavior that sabotages their success, and their codependency on people that may be taking care of them. One business coach told me that she was proud of me because I was a single mom and that there were a lot of women business owners that appeared to be more successful because they could depend on their husband’s money. Well, even the single mompreneurs may have men or others in their lives that they depend on – perhaps too much.

PostHeaderIcon Business Loans for Women Business Owners

Women business loans are now one of the most popular forms of business loans in America. That’s because more and more women are entering the business world and becoming small and large scale entrepreneurs. There are now successful women business people in almost every area of business and most of them got their start in business by applying for and successfully getting womens business loans.

Women are sometimes at a disadvantage in the business world because they have had to shoulder more of the burden in raising children and looking after house and home. This has meant that their business credit has not has a chance to mature as quickly as some of their male counterparts and has caused banks to sometimes turn down legitimate requests for womens business loans.

One agency that is doing its best to help small banks and other lending institutions provide more womens business loans is the Small Business Administration. They have a series of services and programs including an Online Women’s Business Center that offers women entrepreneurs specific advice and guidance as to how to get more womens business loans. There are also many women’s business organizations in the United States who not only provide advice but also assign mentors and coaches to help women get the womens business loans they need. Special programs also exist for women military veterans, women with disabilities, and immigrant and minority women.

One way to increase the chances of success in getting womens business loans is for women who want to start their own business to apply for a credit card in the name of the business that they want to operate. This allows the women business owner to build their business credit resume at the same time as they build their business. It may be necessary to use personal credit to obtain a business credit card but once that business card is approved it starts building a woman’s business credit rating and record right away. This will certainly make it a little easier when one goes to the bank to apply for womens business loans.

Women now contribute a lot to the growth and prosperity of the country and women owned and operated businesses now employ over 27 million people in the United States. Several trail blazers have opened up the doors for women entrepreneurs and nothing, not even a banks reluctance to provide womens business loans will hold them back. It is still not easy for women to qualify or get approved for womens business loans but the sheer number of women in business is making it hard to slow them down.

Women have a great capacity to own and run businesses at every level of the economy and step by step they are convincing banks of that fact. The increasing number of womens business loans is proof positive to that effect.
